Ron Crabtree as guest on The Manufacturer's Network

MetaExperts’s CEO Ron Crabtree joined Lisa Ryan on an episode of The Manufacturers’ Network to discuss strategies for addressing pressing issues in the manufacturing industry and how manufacturers can position themselves for long-term success. Dive into their conversation as Ron shares his thoughts on three major challenges: a permanent labor shortage, the need for digital transformation, and the pressure to do more with less.

1. The Forever Labor Shortage

Manufacturers across North America are struggling with an ongoing labor shortage that is only expected to worsen. According to a Congressional Budget Office study, workforce growth has steadily declined over the last four decades – from nearly 12% in the 1990s to below 5% today. With low birth rates, restrictive immigration policies, and an aging workforce, the labor crisis is here to stay.

To combat this, manufacturers must focus on becoming an “employer of choice” by:

  • Attracting top talent through competitive wages, benefits, and a strong company culture.
  • Investing in workforce development to upskill existing employees and prepare them for evolving job roles.
  • Improving workplace conditions – from modernized facilities to better work-life balance – to attract younger talent who may view manufacturing as outdated.

2. Digitization of Work

Digital transformation and automation are key solutions to the labor shortage, but many manufacturers lag behind in adopting modern technologies. AI, machine learning, and robotic process automation (RPA) are no longer futuristic concepts. They are essential tools for staying competitive.

Ron emphasized that successful digital transformation requires:

  • A deep understanding of current processes before implementing technology. Without this, manufacturers risk automating inefficiencies rather than improving them.
  • Leveraging AI and automation strategically to reduce manual tasks, speed up operations, and improve accuracy.
  • Continuous workforce training to ensure employees can adapt to and leverage new technologies.

As Ron notes, if you can’t describe what you’re doing as a process, you don’t know what you’re doing. This highlights the importance of value stream mapping to identify inefficiencies before layering on technology solutions.

3. Doing More With Less: Efficiency Is Key

With rising costs and global competition, manufacturers must find ways to operate leaner and smarter. This means:

  • Reducing waste and inefficiencies using Lean Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Optimizing supply chain logistics to improve forecasting, reduce downtime, and streamline operations.
  • Automating repetitive tasks to allow employees to focus on higher-value work.

Companies that fail to embrace data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement will struggle to keep up in today’s rapidly evolving market.

Building a Strong Manufacturing Workforce

Ron emphasized that employee engagement and retention are just as critical as hiring. A successful workforce includes:

  • Creating a culture of safety: This includes physical safety as well as emotional and psychological safety, where employees feel valued and heard.
  • Providing career growth opportunities: Workers should feel they have a clear future within the company.
  • Leveraging data to track workforce trends: Tracking trends such as turnover rates, employee satisfaction, and hiring timelines can help your organization make informed HR decisions.

Additionally, facilities should be modern, well-lit, and inviting. A simple change like fresh paint or updated break rooms can significantly improve employee satisfaction and retention.

Preparing for the Future

The future of manufacturing depends on proactively addressing workforce challenges, embracing digital transformation, and optimizing operations to remain competitive. Companies that invest in people, process, and technology today will be better positioned for sustainable growth tomorrow.
