MetaExperts CEO Ron Crabtree joined host David Muller on a recent episode of Advanced Manufacturing Now to explore the ever-evolving relationship between manufacturing and artificial intelligence (AI). With over 40 years of experience from shop floor operations to digital transformation leadership, Ron offers a seasoned and strategic view on how small and mid-sized manufacturers can thrive in today’s complex industrial environment.

Ron’s Strategic Leadership

Ron’s journey began on the floor of a travel trailer assembly line and progressed through automotive, healthcare, consulting, and executive roles at companies like Disney’s MAPO division and Ford. Today, as CEO of MetaExperts, he leads a network of over 1,200 certified and vetted interim experts who help manufacturers and distributors solve high-stakes operational challenges.

Four Common Challenges Facing Manufacturers

Ron outlines four persistent pain points for today's manufacturers:

  1. Digital Transformation: While AI is often touted as a cure-all, this is not the case. Integrating it effectively into operations is an ongoing and complex task.
  2. The Forever Labor Shortage: With workforce participation declining steadily for over 40 years, manufacturers face a critical shortage of skilled labor. This will continue to be a challenge for years to come.
  3. Pressure to Do More with Less: Operational excellence and lean methodologies are no longer optional; they’re survival tactics.
  4. Supply Chain Disruption and Tariff Uncertainty: Geopolitical shifts and evolving trade policies make agility and risk modeling essential.

Smarter Workforce Strategies Start with Clarity

Ron emphasizes that companies must start by identifying their most important business objective, whether it’s growth, cost reduction, or agility, and align improvement efforts around this goal. Workforce development is central to this strategy. This can be done in many ways, including through employer-of-choice initiatives, veteran recruiting, or remote work flexibility. Regardless of the method, Ron stresses the need for intentional workforce strategy planning.

Automation + People = Operational Power

Rather than replacing workers, AI can amplify human decision-making. Ron shares examples from supply chain and procurement:

  • Logistics: AI can rapidly generate optimized shipping options, while humans make the final call using judgment and nuance.
  • Procurement: Solutions like Arkestro software utilize AI and game theory to evaluate supplier options, model tariff exposure, and even assess ESG compliance, streamlining time-consuming RFP and bidding processes.

The takeaway? Automation does not replace people but rather makes their work more impactful when applied correctly.

Getting Started with Digital Transformation

Ron urges manufacturers to avoid the trap of massive, unfocused digital initiatives. Instead, he advocates for:

  • Mapping Key Processes: Use value stream mapping to identify bottlenecks, redundancies, and rework.
  • Short, Focused Sprints: Any new tech initiative should deliver proof of concept within 90 days, or it may not be worth doing.
  • Smart Software Decisions: Don’t overcommit to tools you can’t manage. Smaller companies should consider automation-as-a-service providers instead of building internal systems from scratch.

He shares a powerful case study of a custom building manufacturer that used these principles to reduce design cycle time by 35-40% by integrating sales and engineering data systems and empowering sales staff to make better technical decisions earlier in the process.

Preparing for Tariff Shocks with Data

When asked about navigating tariff uncertainty, Ron emphasizes modeling. Manufacturers must understand which suppliers and parts are exposed, quantify the impact, and plan for best- and worst-case scenarios. Data drives decisions, and if you don’t know your exposure, you can’t protect yourself.

Ron’s closing advice is clear: be surgical, be goal-driven, and make sure every digital investment shows results fast. In a world of uncertainty and complexity, manufacturers who take a focused, data-driven approach will be best positioned to grow and compete.
